When two separate embryos develop simultaneously in the womb and are born as siblings, they are referred to as twins. Twins can either be identical or fraternal, depending on whether they share the same genetic makeup.

Identical twins, also known as monozygotic twins, are the result of a single fertilized egg that splits into two embryos. These twins share 100% of their genetic material and are therefore genetically identical.

On the other hand, fraternal twins, also called dizygotic twins, develop from two separate eggs fertilized by two different sperm cells. As a result, these twins share about 50% of their genetic material, just like any other siblings.

Twinning can occur naturally or with the help of assisted reproductive technology such as in vitro fertilization. The incidence of twinning varies across different populations and can be influenced by factors such as maternal age, genetics, and ethnicity.

While identical twins may look alike, they can still have distinct personalities, interests, and characteristics. This underscores the role of both genetics and environment in shaping an individual's development.

Throughout history, twins have often been the subject of fascination and speculation, with many cultures attributing special powers or significance to them. In modern times, twins continue to capture the imagination of people around the world.

From sharing a unique bond that goes beyond words to experiencing life's milestones together, twins have a special connection that sets them apart from others. This closeness often leads to a deep sense of understanding and companionship that lasts a lifetime.
