What is Naevus?

Naevus, commonly known as a mole, is a noncancerous growth on the skin that occurs when cells in the skin grow in a cluster instead of spreading out. These growths can appear anywhere on the skin and vary in color, shape, and size. Naevi can be flat or raised, smooth or rough, and can range in color from pink to brown to black.

Symptoms and Types of Naevus

Most naevi are harmless and do not cause any symptoms. However, some may itch, bleed, or change in size or color over time. There are different types of naevi, including common moles, congenital moles present at birth, dysplastic nevi that are irregular in shape and color, and halo naevi surrounded by a white ring.

Treatment and Removal

While most naevi do not require treatment, some may be removed for cosmetic reasons or if they pose a risk of developing into skin cancer. Removal methods include surgical excision, shaving, laser therapy, and cryotherapy. It is essential to consult a dermatologist for proper evaluation and management of naevi.

Prevention and Monitoring

Preventive measures for naevi include avoiding excessive sun exposure, using sunscreen, wearing protective clothing, and regularly monitoring moles for any changes. Any changes in the size, shape, color, or texture of a naevus should be promptly assessed by a healthcare professional to rule out skin cancer.
