Louis II, also known as Louis the German, was a king of East Francia from 843 to 876. He was the youngest son of Emperor Louis the Pious and his first wife, Ermengarde of Hesbaye. Louis II was born in 804 in Frankfurt, Germany, and he was the only one of his siblings to receive a kingdom as part of the Treaty of Verdun in 843.
