Cernan, also known as Eugene Cernan, was an American astronaut and naval aviator. He is best known for being the last person to walk on the moon during the Apollo 17 mission in 1972.

Early Life and Education

Cernan was born on March 14, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Purdue University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. He later went on to receive a Master of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School.

Naval Career

After completing his education, Cernan joined the U.S. Navy and became a naval aviator. He logged over 5,000 hours of flying time, including 200 carrier landings, before being selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in 1963.

Astronaut Career

Cernan's first space flight was as the pilot of Gemini 9A in 1966. He went on to fly to space two more times, as the lunar module pilot of Apollo 10 in 1969 and as the commander of Apollo 17 in 1972. During Apollo 17, Cernan and his crewmate Harrison Schmitt spent just over three days on the lunar surface, conducting experiments and collecting samples.

Legacy

Cernan retired from NASA and the Navy in 1976. He went on to have a successful career in the private sector and continued to be an advocate for space exploration. He passed away on January 16, 2017, leaving behind a legacy of inspiration and exploration.
