Carburizing is a process used to increase the hardness of the surface of a low carbon steel part. This is achieved by introducing carbon into the surface layer of the steel, creating a carbon-rich surface while maintaining a low carbon content in the core. The process involves heating the steel part in a carbon-rich atmosphere at high temperatures, typically between 850°C and 950°C.

Carburizing Process

Pack carburizing involves placing the steel part in a carbon-rich material, such as charcoal, and heating it to the carburizing temperature. Liquid carburizing is a faster process that involves immersing the steel part in a bath of molten salts containing carbon.

Austenitizing is a critical step in the carburizing process, where the steel part is heated to a temperature above its critical point, transforming the microstructure into austenite. This allows the carbon atoms to diffuse into the steel more easily, creating a hardened surface layer.

Case hardening is another term used interchangeably with carburizing, as both processes involve increasing the hardness of the surface layer of a steel part. However, case hardening can also refer to other processes, such as nitriding and carbonitriding, which achieve similar results through different methods.
