Woodson is a highly respected figure in the field of African American history and literature. He was born on December 19, 1875, in Buckingham County, Virginia. Woodson was the son of formerly enslaved parents, and he grew up working in the coal mines of West Virginia as a child.

Education and Career

Despite facing many obstacles, Woodson was determined to get an education. He eventually earned his high school diploma and went on to attend Berea College in Kentucky. After graduating, he taught in West Virginia before furthering his education at the University of Chicago and Harvard University.

Founder of Black History Month
