Liliuokalani was the last reigning monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaii, ruling from January 17, 1891, until the overthrow of the monarchy on January 17, 1893. Born on September 2, 1838, as Lydia Liliʻu Loloku Walania Wewehi Kamakaʻeha, she ascended to the throne after the death of her brother, King Kalakaua.
During her reign, Liliuokalani faced tremendous pressure from American business interests who sought to annex Hawaii to the United States. Despite her efforts to draft a new constitution that would restore power to the monarchy, a group of American and European residents staged a coup d'état that removed her from power.
