Hyksos were a group of people who ruled ancient Egypt during the Second Intermediate Period, from around 1650 to 1550 BCE. The word "Hyksos" is believed to mean "rulers of foreign lands," as they were of foreign origin.

Origin of Hyksos

The Hyksos were believed to have come from Western Asia, possibly from the region of Canaan. They managed to gain control of Lower Egypt and establish their capital at Avaris in the Nile Delta.

Hyksos Rule

During their rule, the Hyksos introduced new technologies to Egypt, such as the horse-drawn chariot and the compound bow. They also introduced new artistic styles, like the use of faience, a type of glazed ceramic.

Downfall of the Hyksos

The Hyksos rule in Egypt eventually came to an end when the Theban rulers from Upper Egypt led a successful revolt against them. The Thebans were able to expel the Hyksos from Egypt and reunify the country.

After their defeat, the Hyksos were driven out of Egypt and their influence gradually faded away. However, their legacy still remains in the history of ancient Egypt as a period of foreign rule and cultural exchange.
