Prince of Malis, Ephialtes was a prominent figure in Greek history, known for his betrayal during the Second Persian invasion of Greece in 480 BC. Ephialtes played a critical role in the Battle of Thermopylae, ultimately leading to the defeat of the Greek forces.

The Betrayal

Ephialtes, seeking monetary gain and fame, offered to show the Persian forces a hidden mountain pass that would allow them to outflank the Greek army at Thermopylae. This pass, known as the Anopaea, was located behind the Greek defensive position and would enable the Persians to surround the Greek forces and attack them from both sides.

The Battle of Thermopylae

With the knowledge provided by Ephialtes, the Persian forces, under the command of King Xerxes I, were able to outmaneuver the Greek defenders at Thermopylae. The Spartan King Leonidas and his small force of 300 Spartans, alongside other Greek troops, fought valiantly against the overwhelming Persian army but were ultimately defeated due to the betrayal of Ephialtes.

Legacy

The betrayal of Ephialtes had far-reaching consequences for Greece. The defeat at Thermopylae allowed the Persians to advance further into Greek territory, leading to the eventual sacking of Athens. However, Ephialtes met a fitting end as his treachery was despised by the Greek allies, and he was eventually assassinated.

Ephialtes's actions at Thermopylae have been remembered as one of the most infamous betrayals in Greek history and a cautionary tale of greed and selfish ambition. Despite his betrayal, the courage and sacrifice of the Greek defenders at Thermopylae have inspired generations and became a symbol of resistance against overwhelming odds.
