Corday d'Armont, also known as Charlotte Corday, was a French revolutionary figure who is remembered for her assassination of Jean-Paul Marat, a prominent leader of the French Revolution. Corday was born on July 27, 1768, in Normandy, France.

Early Life and Education

Corday was raised in a noble family and received an education typical of young women of her class during that time. She was well-read and politically aware, which would later influence her actions during the revolution.

Assassination of Marat

In July 1793, Corday made the decision to travel to Paris and eliminate Marat, whom she blamed for the escalating violence of the revolution. On July 13, she gained entry to Marat's home under the pretense of having important information about counter-revolutionary activities. Once inside, she fatally stabbed him in his bath.

The Death of Marat sparked both shock and admiration across France. While some condemned her actions, others praised her for her bravery in standing up against a figure they viewed as a tyrant.

Trial and Execution

Corday was quickly arrested and brought to trial. She showed no remorse for her actions and was swiftly sentenced to death. On July 17, 1793, just four days after Marat's assassination, Corday was executed by guillotine.

Despite her ultimate fate, Corday's actions have been remembered as a bold and dramatic stand against what she believed to be the oppressive forces within the revolution. Her legacy remains a subject of debate and analysis among historians and scholars to this day.
