Charles Albert

Charles Albert (1798-1849) was the King of Sardinia from 1831 until his abdication in 1849. He played a key role in the Italian unification process, also known as the Risorgimento. Born in Turin, Italy, Charles Albert belonged to the House of Savoy, a noble family with a long history in the region.

Early Life and Reign

At the age of 29, Charles Albert ascended to the throne of Sardinia. Initially, he was seen as a liberal ruler who supported constitutional monarchy and reforms. However, his reputation suffered after he suppressed a rebellion in 1833.

Italian Unification

During his reign, Charles Albert attempted to lead the Italian states to independence and unity. In 1848, he declared war on Austria, one of the major obstacles to Italian unification. Despite initial victories, the conflict ended in defeat for Sardinia.

Abdication and Legacy

Following the defeat, Charles Albert abdicated the throne in favor of his son, Victor Emmanuel II. He retired to a monastery in Portugal, where he died in 1849. Despite his failures, Charles Albert is remembered for his efforts to unify Italy and his role in the Risorgimento.
