Capacitive technology is a method used in electronic devices to detect and measure capacitance. This technology relies on the electrical charge stored in a capacitor to sense touch or proximity. Unlike resistive touchscreens, capacitive touchscreens do not rely on pressure to function. Instead, they respond to the electrical properties of the human body.

How does capacitive technology work?

Capacitive touchscreens feature a glass panel coated with a transparent conductor, such as indium tin oxide (ITO). When the screen is touched, it creates a distortion in the screen's electrostatic field. This distortion is detected by sensors located at each corner of the screen, allowing the device to determine the touch point.

Surface capacitance and projected capacitance

There are two main types of capacitive touchscreens: surface capacitive and projected capacitive. Surface capacitive screens have a single layer of ITO on the glass surface and use changes in capacitance to detect touch. Projected capacitive screens have a multi-layer structure with ITO sensors located in a grid pattern, allowing for multi-touch functionality.
